Marks Store

You can find the thread for the Marks Store (wherein you make your purchases) here.

Marks

Marks are both the in-character currency of Pern, and a system of currency used out of character to purchase modifiers, bonds and abilities for your characters. In character, marks exist more or less as freely as a characters rank would permit. High ranking riders have lots of marks, low ranking riders have a modest stipend, as do crafters, and rankless characters such as Weyrfolk and Holders usually regard a mark a week as a reasonable living salary. Marks themselves are wooden coins which are treated by the Smith Hall in such a way that they do not burn (a counterfeiting protection), and come in denominations varying from 1/32 to 500.

Out of Character, Marks are spent at the Marks Shop to buy things for your characters or for future characters. Marks can be given to another player in exchange for services as well, such as if a player draws your character or dragon. Marks can also be given as a gift, or spent on Surprise Bags, which are discussed below.

Event Marks

Event marks are marks given to you as payment for participating in site-wide events.

Character Creation/NPC Play

Particularly during Northern Incursions, NPCs are needed to play enemies. IN addition, as plots arise, important ranked characters may need to be created permanently.

Temporary Characters will grant you 10 marks per character, per event. Not per thread.

Permanent/Ranked Characters will grant you 30 marks per character. Because this is a permanent character, this is a one-time per character payment.

Participation and Hosting

Hosting a Mating Flight or Run regardless of your female's fertility, will give you 20 marks.

Chasing in a Mating Flight or Run will give you 15 marks.

Winning a Mating Flight or Run will give you an additional 15 marks, for a total of 30.

Attending a Hatching With A Non-Candidate will grant you 15 marks per non-candidate. This excludes stands-impression candidates ("standidates").

'Ling Lessons Attendance will give you 10 marks per lesson. However, to be considered 'in attendance' you must post at least twice. Each separate lesson is another mark-making opportunity. One payment is made per lesson, regardless of number of characters.

Wing/Run/Fair Training Participating in a training drill with other members of your fighting unit (Wings for riders, Runs for handlers, Fairs for pet trainers) will give you 10 marks, however, you must post at least twice to be considered 'in attendance'. One payment is made per training session, regardless of number of characters.

Salary Marks

Once a month, admins will pay you a salary, which is calculated using an undisclosed formula based on your activity level and your current number of characters, as well as their respective ranks. Rest assured that, as far as we can tell, it is a very generous formula, as since the start of salary payment, players have been noted as saying, "Marks build up amazingly quickly now," and often, "Shards! How did I get that many marks?!"

Holiday Marks

During major holidays, particularly holidays associated with site-wide contests or OOC events, Admins often give a flat marks bonus to all active players. In addition, during "random gift" events, wherein each player chooses a number from 1-50 (or thereabouts) it is possible to win as many as 1000 marks in a lump sum, in addition to otherwise unobtainable character modifiers.

Modifiers

Modifers is a general umbrella term referring to anything you can buy in the Marks store. Some of these, such as pets and bonds, may not intuitively be considered modifiers. Any modifier can be applied as-new, or retroactively. For example, if you bought an L2 HAD Ability modifier, you may state that Character X has always been able to Hear All Dragons and kept it a secret, that everyone knew and it just never came up, or that the ability itself is new.

Character Types

Character Types are a broad variety of traits, including restricted ranks and restricted phenotypes (eg, Albinos).

You know, That Guy, The one from that… thing 300. Allows you to create a Transfer Rider from a Northern Weyr. Obviously, you can have your human characters have as many babies as they like, but please remember that the conception we think of as natural, eg heterosexual intercourse, is considered more than a little obscene and unnatural, certainly not polite conversation around company. A baby conceived in this way may have prejudice against it, and the mother may attempt to conceal the facts. Mothers who are open about their sexual activites, such as Weyrwoman Rean, are often considered somewhere in between dirty whores and utter idiots. This is a uniquely southern prejudice, and folk from the north may not understand or acknowledge it.

Surprise Bags

Surprise bags are a way to get items you can't afford, or can't usually purchase, through random chance. Somewhere, an Admin has a list with several hundred items on it.
